The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has announced plans to install 25,000 street lights across the region. According to Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, these street lights will be solar-powered, addressing ongoing concerns about poor visibility on many roads at night.
This initiative comes in response to numerous complaints by motorists and residents regarding the dangers posed by poorly lit streets. The new street lights aim to improve road safety and reduce crime rates in the region.
Speaking at a regional town hall meeting, Mr. Titus Glover emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing security. “Because criminals don’t like visibility, the government has supported the region to make sure we light up the entire region with some street lights. In phase one, 10,000 street lights were distributed in 2022,” he said.
He further outlined the plan for the current and upcoming phases: “In 2023, we distributed 20,000 street lights, and in phase three, we are going to install 25,000 more. There is a process in place where a company wants to partner with the regional coordinating council to implement a solar-powered pilot project on the Tema Motorway. They will begin from Shiashie through the Airport to 37 to Accra Central.”
The project will also extend to other major routes: “We will look at the N1 all the way to Weija Gbawe. Then we come to Achimota, the Overhead, through the Forestry Commission, the Achimota Police Station, GIMPA and then we make a turn towards Fiesta Royale.”
This comprehensive lighting plan aims to significantly enhance visibility and safety for residents and motorists in the Greater Accra region, fostering a more secure and well-lit environment.
