35 die after floor of temple collapses in India

An accident at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in the Indian city of Indore has resulted in the deaths of 35 people who fell into a well while offering prayers.

The victims were standing on a concrete slab covering the well during a prayer ceremony on the occasion of the Hindu festival of Ram Navami when it collapsed under their weight.

Fourteen others have been rescued and one person is still missing. The temple was constructed after the well had been covered around four decades ago.

The incident has prompted a search operation involving 75 personnel, and compensation of 500,000 rupees ($6000; £4900) has been announced for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for the injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and offered 200,000 rupees as compensation for the victims’ families.
