Pep Guardiola Wants Real Madrid Clash to Be Fairer Than Previous Champions League Ties
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants their upcoming clash with Real Madrid to be ‘fair for both sides’, while he has also responded to Zinedine Zidane’s claims that he is the best manager in the world.
City take on the Spanish giants at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of their last 16 tussle in the Champions League on Wednesday.
City boss Guardiola has alluded to his side’s recent fortunes in the competition, with decisions often going against them in the knockout stages. They went out to Tottenham in the quarter-finals last season with Fernando Llorente scoring a controversial goal, as the ball appeared to strike his arm for the winner. Guardiola pointed to these incidents ahead of Wednesday’s game.
“You have to be many things and you have to be lucky,” he said, as quoted by the Guardian.
“In the knockout stages, the decisions in certain points are important, although we cannot control that. Last season and the previous ones – when we play in Liverpool and in the second game [against them], there were decisions… but you have to overcome.
“Many things happen but it’s football. I would like it to be more fair and hopefully it can be fair for both sides. I don’t like to win with the wrong decisions.”
The former Barcelona man received huge praise from Zidane ahead of the game, with the Madrid boss admitting that Guardiola is the best manager in the world.
“I appreciate his words but I’ve never aspired to be one,” Guardiola added. “What Zidane has done in Europe, I think it will not be repeated. Today, to win the Champions League once is huge because for every player that doesn’t win the Champions League, it feels like a failure.”
