Scientists at KNUST develop test kits for COVID-19

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST) have developed a test kit for the novel coronavirus as the country embarks on massive tracing and testing.

According to sources, the the test kit is before the Food and Drugs Authority( FDA) for checks and approval, after which, it will be given to the Noguchi Centre for Medical Research for efficacy tests and final approval.

“My information is that scientists at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have developed a test kit for COVID-19, which is currently before the FDA for quality check and approval before it goes to Noguchi for efficacy test and approval. Fingers crossed,” a prominent member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko wrote.

Ghanaians have shown their creativity and ingenuity since the pandemic struck the country by manufacturing and devising all sorts of tools and equipment, from prototypes of ventilators to improved hand washing equipment among others, needed in containing the virus.

In Ghana, 1550 people have been infected with 11 deaths and 155 recovery as at April 26, 2020 according to the Ghana Health Service

Greater Accra, Ashanti and Eastern Regions are the hardest hit with high number of infections.

The Ghana Health Service Data indicated that 84% of the COVID-19 infected people are people without travel history while 16% of the people are people with travel history.
