WCQ2022: “Teamwork, unity and effort get us past South Africa”- Andre Ayew

Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew, has praised the efforts of his fellow players in getting the team to win against South Africa in the final Group G 2022 World Cup qualifier that was played in Cape Coast on Sunday, November 14.

Ayew’s 33rd minute penalty settled the tie in Ghana’s favour and gave them a place in the playoffs and a chance to be one of Africa’s 5 representatives in the next World Cup.

Ayew won his 100th cap on the day and after the match, he told journalists that even though his name was on the score sheet, the result down to all the hard work that his team mates put in and he was very pleased to see how willing the team was to get the needed result.

“Three days ago (against Ethiopia), I scored but we did not the result we wanted  and we also did not know what the outcome of the South Africa match would be.

It is all about team work. I scored the penalty but I did not create it. Daniel Amartey did and that gave me the opportunity to step forward and do what I to do.

It was not easy after the Ethiopia game. Sometimes, people do not see what really happens in games but I was proud to see what I saw today (against South Africa).

Can we play better? Of course, we can but I was proud to see the desire, the fighting spirit and the tactical ability and unity that we showed today.

I hope we continue like this and we get better over time when we train more and more and work with our coach.”

The result means that Ghana joins, Egypt, Senegal, Mali, Morocco and DR Congo as countries to have booked places in the playoffs.

There are four more spots to be filled when the last round of qualifiers on the continent is played between November 15 and 17.
