GHMediaHubBlack Stars captain, Andre Dede Ayew, has issued an apology for the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.
Despite high expectations, the Black Stars failed to advance to the round of 16 from Group B, managing only two points from three games.
With a loss to Cape Verde and draws against Mozambique and Egypt, Ghana faced an early exit from the tournament for the second consecutive edition.
The team’s underwhelming display sparked criticism from Ghanaians, who questioned the players’ commitment and patriotism.
In a video statement, veteran forward Ayew took responsibility for the team’s shortcomings and expressed regret over their performance.
“I would like to apologize for the results in the AFCON that we just exited. We know that we should have done better; that we should have brought better results to the nation. As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch,” Ayew stated.
He acknowledged the disappointment felt by fans and assured them that the team would strive to restore Ghana’s pride on the international stage.
“For the playing body, we should have done better,” he added to the apology, which was released exactly a week after Ghana’s elimination from the 2023 AFCON was confirmed.
