GHMediaHubReal Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to eight points with a contentious 1-0 victory over Sevilla, marking Sergio Ramos’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu with a defeat against his former club.
Despite Real Madrid’s dominance in possession from the start, it was Sevilla who had the first opportunity of the match when Isaac Romero’s cross found Youssef En-Nesyri, who squandered a clear chance by blazing his shot wide.
Real Madrid thought they had taken the lead through Lucas Vazquez, but the goal was correctly disallowed after a VAR review deemed that Nacho had fouled En-Nesyri in the build-up.
Sevilla’s well-organized defense, led by the experienced Ramos, limited Real Madrid’s attacking threats, with goalkeeper Orjan Nyland only called into action to tip Federico Valverde’s long-range effort over the bar just before halftime.
After the break, Brahim Diaz almost set up a goal for Valverde, whose shot struck the post. Lunin then made a crucial save to deny Romero at the other end.
Real Madrid continued to push for a breakthrough, with Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior both going close before Nyland made another impressive save to deny Vinícius.
The match was briefly halted in the second half due to the referee’s injury, with the fourth official taking his place on the field for the remainder of the game.
With 15 minutes left, Luka Modrić replaced Nacho, and the veteran midfielder made an immediate impact by scoring a stunning goal from outside the box. Sevilla protested that the goal should have been disallowed due to an offside position by Antonio Rudiger, but the goal stood.
Real Madrid’s unbeaten streak at the Santiago Bernabeu continues, and they now face Valencia next weekend, while Sevilla aims to bounce back against Real Sociedad.
