GHMediaHubGhanaian long-distance runner William Amponsah has clinched a silver medal in the men’s half-marathon event at the ongoing 13th African Games hosted at the University of Ghana.
Amponsah demonstrated remarkable prowess, completing the race in an impressive time of 1:05:13, securing the second spot behind Eritrean athlete Samson Amare, who clocked 1:05:04. Zimbabwe’s Mpofu Isaac secured the third position with a time of 1:05:37.
Throughout the race, Amponsah maintained a strong pace, strategically positioning himself among the leading pack as they navigated the designated half-marathon routes. As the competition approached its conclusion, he engaged in a tight battle with Eritrea’s Amare, ultimately securing the second-place position ahead of Mpofu Isaac from Zimbabwe.
Amponsah was not alone in representing Ghana in the half-marathon race, as he was accompanied by Koogo Atia, the 2022 Ghana Armed Forces Cross Country champion, who finished 15th with a time of 1:12:14.
In addition to his half-marathon success, Amponsah also made headlines earlier in the athletics competition by breaking the national record in the men’s 10,000m race, clocking an impressive time of 29:50.99, surpassing his own record set in January 2020.
As the athletics competition at the African Games progresses, several Ghanaian athletes are poised to compete in various events on the final day. Notable contenders include Hamidu Asana in the women’s 400m hurdles, Janet Mensah, Ibrahim Fuseini, and Joseph Paul Amoah in the women’s and men’s 200m finals, and Abraham Seaneke, who aims for a podium finish in the men’s long jump event.
