Swiss coach Yakin to relish Italy win before focusing on quarter-final challenge

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin expressed his desire to savor his team’s impressive 2-0 victory over Italy in the last 16 of Euro 2024 before focusing on their upcoming quarter-final match against either England or Slovakia. The Swiss team delivered a clinical performance, outplaying the defending champions with their usual system and strategic pressure.

Yakin highlighted the importance of the victory and emphasized the team’s preparedness for their next opponent. “We won an important game, and that’s what’s crucial – as for what happens tomorrow, what comes after that, we’ll prepare well again for our next opponent,” he told reporters.

The Swiss coach acknowledged that sticking to their regular system and maintaining players in their usual positions was key to their success against Italy. “We kept them busy and put them under pressure,” Yakin said. “It’s not only that we won today but how we won today.”

Switzerland’s midfielder Rubin Vargas, who was named player of the match, praised his team’s aggressive approach from the start. “We didn’t give them time to breathe,” he said.

This victory marked Switzerland’s ninth win over Italy in 62 attempts and their first since 1993. The Swiss, who have now reached the knockout stages of their sixth consecutive major tournament, will face the winner of Sunday’s game between England and Slovakia in the quarter-finals.

Italy, the defending champions, face the disappointment of exiting the European Championship before the quarter-final stage for the first time in 20 years.
