8 dead after boat capsized on the Oti River

Tragedy struck on Monday, March 27, as a boat carrying mourners capsized on the Oti River, resulting in the deaths of eight people. The boat was reportedly carrying 15 mourners from Kpajoti village in the Krachi Nchumuru District to Sabaja in the Krachi West Municipality when it capsized.

One of the survivors revealed in an interview that the boat had been carrying 15 people when the incident occurred at around midday. The eight people who died included two children under the age of five and six adults, while seven others managed to survive the tragedy.

Another survivor stated that the boat was patched in several areas, allowing water to splash through. According to the assemblyman for the area, Francis Yaw Bio, an inexperienced teenager was allowed to use the canoe, and the victims were not wearing life jackets.

The bodies of the victims were buried after the incident was reported to the police and an autopsy examination was carried out by a medical officer from Krachi West Municipal Hospital. The incident highlights the need for greater safety measures and awareness when travelling on waterways, particularly in areas where boats may not be well-maintained or operated by inexperienced individuals.
