GhMediaHubLiverpool players will have to wait some time before they’re rewarded for an extraordinary season.
A Premier League meeting on Friday confirmed that fixtures would not be continuing at the start of May as the coronavirus crisis tightens its hold on the UK.
That means individual accolades are also on hold and it will be months before we find out who is crowned Player of the Season.
The Reds are hoping to make it three on the bounce after Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s awards in 2017/18 and 2018/19 respectively.
The season might not be over (at least we hope not), but most fans have already seen enough from the 29 games played so far to form an opinion.
So when Sky Sports asked over 50,000 of their readers who their standout player was, there was a clear winner: Sadio Mane.
The Senegal international took home 33% of the vote, beating teammate Jordan Henderson by 2%.
Kevin De Bruyne was the only non-Liverpool player in the reckoning, the Manchester City playmaker being rewarded for his eight league goals and 16 assists with a 20% cut.
Van Dijk (5%) and Salah (2%) were well behind, with the ‘someone else’ category picking up an intriguing 9%.
Who might that ‘someone else’ be? While voters weren’t able to specify, our money would be on the likes of Jamie Vardy – Premier League top scorer with 19 goals and having scored in eight consecutive games earlier in the season – being prominent in their thoughts.
Raheem Sterling has also hit three hat-tricks, though the City forward has struggled to hit those heights since the turn of the calendar year.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and his 12 assists would be another dark horse.
