Poachers arrested in Mole National Park

On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, three suspected poachers were arrested by Rangers of Mole National Park for killing wildlife animals on two reserves in Ghana. The suspects, identified as Abroni Yelinge, 32, Dramani Gafaru, 20, and Manlidong Kasumaa, 24, all farmers, were apprehended after raiding the landmarks at Jilinkong in the Sawla district and Laribaga in the West Gonja Municipal of the Savannah region.

The poachers were said to have killed a mongoose, watock, and Roan antelope inside the reserve. The Chief Ali Mahama, park manager of Mole National Park, stated that the suspects were caught and handed over to the district police. The three poachers will be arraigned before the Bole district magistrate court on March 29, 2023.

Poaching is a serious threat to wildlife conservation efforts, and it is illegal under Ghanaian law. Mole National Park, which covers an area of over 4,577 square kilometers, is home to over 93 mammal species, including elephants, lions, buffalo, and antelopes.

The park also has over 300 bird species, making it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and tourists. The park authorities have been working tirelessly to protect and conserve the park’s wildlife, and this recent arrest of poachers is a step in the right direction towards the protection of endangered species in the park.
