US President Joe Biden has authorised sanctions against Sudan, following continued violence in the country. In an executive order, Biden called the fighting a “tragedy” and a “betrayal of the Sudanese people”.
The order comes after the latest ceasefire in the country failed to hold, with heavy fighting reported in Khartoum, as well as Omdurman and Bahri.
The United Nations has warned that the situation is on the brink of catastrophe, with children increasingly caught up in the conflict.
The World Food Programme has also reported that over $13m worth of food aid destined for Sudan has been looted since the fighting began last month.
The US sanctions will aim to address what the White House has described as an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy” of the US.
