In response to reports of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the organization has issued a statement addressing the situation.
While ECOWAS has not received formal notification directly from the three Member States regarding their intention to exit the Community, it asserts its commitment to seeking a negotiated resolution to the political challenges in those nations.
The announcement of the immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger cited concerns that the organization has deviated from the principles of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.
In its response, ECOWAS reiterates its dedication to collaborating closely with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to facilitate the restoration of constitutional order, in accordance with directives from the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The organization underscores the ongoing importance of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali as integral members of the ECOWAS community, despite the current leadership in these countries being under military control following the ousting of civilian governments.
