England missed their first chance to advance to the 2024 UEFA European Championship knockout rounds after a 1-1 draw with Denmark in Frankfurt, leaving everything to play for in their final group game. England started strongly, needing just 18 minutes to score. Kyle Walker won the ball high up the pitch and crossed to Harry Kane, who scored to become the third England player to net in four different major tournaments.
Despite Kane’s early goal, England couldn’t capitalize and were punished when Morten Hjulmand equalized with a powerful long-range shot in the 34th minute. The goal boosted Denmark, while England struggled to regain momentum.
In the second half, England showed some promise. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long pass set up Bukayo Saka, whose header hit the side netting. Phil Foden also hit the post with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. Gareth Southgate then made several substitutions, bringing on Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, and Ollie Watkins.
Watkins quickly tested Kasper Schmeichel, who made a near-post save. Jordan Pickford kept England in the game with a full-stretch save to deny Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who later missed another chance after a Jude Bellingham error.
The draw leaves England top of their group ahead of their final game against Slovenia. Denmark, with two points, remains in third place.
