Others expressed sadness and shock over the split but wished the couple all the very best for their future endeavours.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda are headed for splitsville after 27 years of marriage, the couple announced on Monday on their social media accounts.
The two put out a joint statement on their Twitter accounts, saying that they will continue to work together at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. However, it clearly mentioned that they can no longer ‘grow as a couple’.
After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” they said in a joint statement.
“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy four our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” it added.
The statement offers no additional details about the split. It has come just two years after the divorce of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife MaxKenzie.
Bill Gates met Melinda for the first time at Microsoft in the year 1987, shortly after she joined the tech firm. The pair married in 1994.
Their foundation is one of the richest in the world, having provided more than $54 billion in areas including malaria and infectious disease control, agricultural research, basic health care, and sanitation.
The news of their split has been trending on social media ever since the announcement was made.
On Twitter, scores of users have been quoting Bill Gates’ statement and offering to date him whenever he is ready.
