Tesla recalls more than a million cars over a fault with its automatic windows

Tesla is recalling over one million cars due to an issue with its automatic windows, per the NHTSA.

The window automatic reversal system might not work if an obstruction gets in the way, the NHTSAsaid. The fault could pose a safety risk of a “pinching injury” to the user, per a NHTSA document.

Elon Musk’s Tesla is recalling more than one million cars because of a problem with its automatic windows, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The automatic reversal system on some vehicles’ windows might not act in the right way if an obstruction gets in the way, a NHTSA filing said.

The NHTSA said 1,096,762 Tesla vehicles could have the fault.

Some Model 3s made between 2017 and 2022, Model Ys manufactured between 2020 and 2021, as well as certain Model Ss and Model Xs built between 2021 and 2022 may be affected by the issue, per the filing.

The vehicles in question “fail to comply” with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard’s requirements about power-operated windows, the NHTSA said in the filing.

The issue was first detected in August, according to a NHTSA non-compliance document. When closing, the window could exert more force than required before retracting. This could pose a safety risk of a “pinching injury” to the driver or passenger, per the document.

Tesla was not aware of any reports, injuries, or deaths related to the fault with its automatic windows, the document said.

The NHTSA said in the filing that Tesla is expected to carry out a free software update for the automatic window reversal system.
