Man jailed 70 years for domestic violence and spitting on police officers

A man in Texas, Larry Pearson, has been sentenced to 70 years in prison after he was found guilty of spitting at police officers during an arrest for domestic violence in May 2022.

The victim had flagged down an officer in northeast Lubbock, telling them that Pearson had hit her several times and that he had a gun, which later turned out to be an airsoft gun.

After Pearson was taken into custody, he became upset that the victim was not arrested instead and began kicking at the doors in the officer’s vehicle.

When the officers opened the door to tell him to stop, Pearson spit at both officers and continued to do so after he arrived at the Lubbock County Detention Center.

The prosecutor argued that Pearson’s prior convictions of aggravated robbery and continuous family violence warranted a sentence that would “send a message” to him and society, while the defense argued that the sentencing was for a “simple misdemeanor” in a circumstance that got “out of control.”

However, due to Pearson’s prior convictions, the minimum sentence he could have received was 25 years.
