Carlos Ahenkorah, a member of parliament representing Tema West Constituency, has underlined that the party runs the risk of losing the 2024 presidential elections if it does not choose a candidate from its Ashanti Region heartland.

Alan John Kyerematen, a former minister of trade and industry, is the best choice for the party for the 2024 elections, according to Mr. Ahenkorah, who was a guest on the GhanaAkoma morning show with Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin.

He thinks it’s time for the party to remove a member from a stronghold.

Politics is a numbers game. Can you win if you claim a certain location is your stronghold but you can’t earn the most votes there? We are well aware that the Ashanti Region has been the NPP’s stronghold since the return to multi-party government.

“So, if the party wants someone who will become president, we need someone who has political capital in the Ashanti Region,” he said.

The Volta Region, which is the heartland of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised him their votes, making him the ideal choice for the NPP, he continued, adding that the NPP as a party must also consider a candidate who can make gains in the stronghold of the opposition.

In addition, we require a candidate who can gain support in the Volta Region, a bastion of the opposition. The Volta Region does not disapprove of the NPP, he insisted.

Ten individuals are competing for the job of a flagbearer for the ruling party, including Alan Kyerematen.

The majority of Ashanti Region residents support Alan Kyerematen’s candidacy, according to Mr. Ahenkorah.
