GhMediaHubParliament’s Defence and Interior Committee Calls for Compensation for Ashaiman Residents Brutalized by Military
In a report released on Friday, Parliament’s Committee on Defence and Interior recommended compensation for residents of Ashaiman who were brutalized by the military in March 2023. The incident, which occurred on March 7, 2023, followed the death of a soldier in the area and led to widespread condemnation.
The committee’s report stated that individuals who suffered injuries during the military operation should be promptly and adequately compensated by the state, according to the evidence and legal framework surrounding the event. Additionally, compensation should also cover those whose properties were damaged during the military operation.
The committee strongly denounced the use of excessive force against civilians and emphasized its opposition to any form of torture by the military or other security agencies.
Furthermore, the committee urged the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces to educate personnel on the legal obligations and consequences related to such actions.
