‘I divorced my wife over 20 years now’ – Gospel musician Yaw Sarpong responds to wife’s allegations

Gospel musician, Yaw Sarpong has addressed recent claims made by estranged wife, Adwoa Pinamang.

During a Sunday church service at New Jerusalem Chapel, where he is receiving treatment in Kumasi, he unequivocally said that he had divorced Pinamang 20 years ago when she took a decision to abandon him and their kids and relocated to Kumasi from Accra without informing him.

Yaw Sarpong explained that he reported the matter to Pinamang’s father and subsequently ended their marriage.

According to him, he took the decision solely without going through any legal process because their marriage was not legally formalised.

He explained that, he did the traditional rites where he was made to present a Bible, soft drinks and a ring.

“It’s been 20 years since I divorced Pinamang…she is no more my wife,” he said, explaining the circumstances of their marriage and divorce.

“I was asked to bring a ring and soft drinks to perform the marital rites. However, she began to act out. Instead of staying in Accra to look after the children, she moved to Kumasi. I reported the issue to her father. By that time, I had recovered from my illness.

Sarpong also dismissed claims of an affair with her co-worker, Maame Tiwaa who is his backup singer.

He explained his decision to allow her to care for him rather than his estranged wife, Pinamang.

“Many of the things she [Pinamang] mentioned, I don’t even recall. I let Tiwaa take care of me because she has been a pillar of support in my career, particularly during challenging times. Those who allege Tiwaa has taken me away from my wife are misinformed. I have not married Tiwaa,” he clarified.

He emphasised that he has moved on but will resolve all outstanding issues with his ex-wife amicably.

The controversy follows an interview Pinamang granted on Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM where she made some damning allegations against the gospel singer and his family.

The devastated wife stated that she had been refused access to care for her sick husband by the musician’s family.

She also expressed her distress over Yaw Sarpong’s family’s decision to allow Maame Tiwaa to care for the music star, leaving her [Adwoa] neglected. She insisted that she is still the wife of Yaw Sarpong, adding that they have four children.
