Firefighters are battling a major blaze at Avenor, with thick smoke billowing across parts of Accra as the fire spreads through the industrial enclave.

A major fire outbreak at Avenor in Accra’s North Industrial Area has spread to the DuraPlast factory, with firefighters working to contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching more businesses and properties.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering panic among residents, traders and workers in the area.

Reports indicate that the fire intensified as it spread through closely packed structures within the industrial enclave, with DuraPlast among the facilities affected.

Firefighters face access challenges

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have been deployed to the scene, with multiple fire tenders involved in efforts to bring the blaze under control.

However, access to parts of the affected area has reportedly been difficult because of the narrow and congested roads.

Local reports have also described challenges involving vehicles and congestion around the area, potentially slowing emergency response efforts.

The GNFS has urged people in the area to make way for emergency responders as firefighters work to reach the affected structures.

Residents flee as fire spreads

Residents and traders in the affected area have been seen moving to safer locations, while some attempt to retrieve valuables and goods from properties close to the fire.

Police officers have also been deployed to assist with security and crowd management, while the National Ambulance Service is on standby to respond to any emergencies.

There have been unconfirmed eyewitness reports of injuries. One eyewitness told Adom FM that a woman had been burnt, but there was no officially confirmed casualty figure at the time of publication.

There are also unverified reports circulating about possible casualties in nearby residential structures. These reports have not been confirmed by emergency authorities and should therefore be treated with caution.

Cause of fire remains unknown

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Authorities have also not released a confirmed assessment of the extent of damage caused to DuraPlast or other businesses and properties in the area.

DuraPlast is a Ghanaian manufacturer of uPVC, PVC and HDPE pipes and fittings used in construction, water supply and other engineering applications.

The company has not yet issued a public statement on the extent of the damage. Firefighters remain at the scene as efforts continue to contain the blaze and protect surrounding businesses and residential properties.
