GhMediaHubThe Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG), Accra West Region, has discovered that 52 customers have been involved in various forms of illegal connections, including meter bypass, meter tampering, and direct connections.
Through these illegal activities, the customers did not pay for the electricity they used, depriving the company of much-needed revenue.
In the ongoing exercise to retrieve all debts owed to the company and monitor the health of its meter installations, the ECG has retrieved GH¢750,000.00 worth of 550,000kWh of electricity illegally used by the customers.
The customers have been disconnected from the power supply, surcharged for the electricity used without payment, and charged a penalty fee for engaging in the illegalities.
Depending on the severity of the offense, some cases will be handed over to the police for prosecution.
The ECG is investing in technology, such as smart meters, to aid in the fight against illegalities, and plans are underway to roll out more of such smart meters.
The Accra West region has eight operational districts.
