A gold trader exposed in Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia investigative documentary has claimed that he smuggles a ton of gold from Ghana every month.

Alistair Mathias, described by the investigative reporters as a financial architect who builds money laundering schemes for corrupt politicians, revealed the details to undercover journalists posing as Chinese criminals.

Mathias, who has been smuggling gold from Ghana for about 13 to 14 years, claimed that he smuggles $40 million worth of gold monthly, which amounts to $480 million worth of gold annually.

He also urged the undercover reporters to set up a company in Dubai to help them launder their money. Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia investigation has uncovered a band of criminals involved in gold smuggling and money laundering worth billions of dollars in Southern Africa and other countries, including Ghana.
