EC’s new CI rejected by parliament

The Ghanaian Parliament has unanimously rejected the Electoral Commission’s proposed Constitutional Instrument (CI) and has instructed them to create a new one that includes the reinstatement of the guarantor system.

This means that the Ghana card will now be the only registration document accepted. Joseph Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker, presented the report to the committee and requested that Parliament officially inform the EC of its decision.

The new CI proposed by the EC removed the guarantor system and limited registration to district offices, with only the Ghana card being accepted as proof of nationality.

The Committee of the Whole met with officials from the EC and NIA, resulting in the production of this report.
