Former Spanish FA boss banned for three years after controversial kiss incident

FIFA has banned Luis Rubiales, the former head of the Spanish Football Association, from any football-related activity for three years.

This choice was made in response to a contentious incident in which Rubiales gave forward Jenni Hermoso a lip kiss during the post-game presentation following Spain’s victory over England in the Women’s World Cup final.

The ban was justified by citing Article 13 of FIFA’s disciplinary code. FIFA placed Rubiales on a provisional ban, and although he first declined to step down, he eventually did so in September.

The lawsuit centered on what happened on August 20, 2023, at the FIFA Women’s World Cup final, for which Rubiales had already received a 90-day suspension. FIFA stated that this incident led to the ban, and Rubiales has ten days to obtain a motivated decision. This ruling would thereafter be made available on legal.fifa.com upon request. The FIFA Appeal Committee may hear an appeal of the ruling at this time.

FIFA emphasized that it is dedicated to upholding the fundamental principles of decent behavior and to honoring and safeguarding the integrity of every individual.
