GHMediaHubGhana’s National Under 20 Women’s Football Team, the Black Princesses, orchestrated a remarkable comeback to secure a thrilling 2-1 victory over Nigeria, clinching the gold medal at the 2023 African Games.
In a momentous match hosted at Ghana’s Cape Coast Stadium, Nigeria initially took the lead in the 23rd minute following a mistake by Ghana goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku. However, Ghana’s resilience shone through as Tracey Twum equalized in the 78th minute, setting the stage for an electrifying finish.
The defining moment came in extra time when Mukarama Abdulai, a standout performer in the knockout stages, seized the opportunity to score the decisive goal, propelling Ghana to victory and igniting jubilation among the home crowd.
Abdulai’s heroics not only secured gold for the Black Princesses but also earned her widespread acclaim after her pivotal contributions in both the semifinals against Senegal and the final clash against Nigeria.
For head coach Yussif Basigi, this triumph marked his second African Games gold medal, following his previous success with Ghana’s Senior Women’s Football Team, the Black Queens, in the 2015 edition.
With the Black Princesses setting the stage for celebration, attention now shifts to the National Under 20 Men’s Football Team, the Black Satellites, as they prepare to vie for gold against Uganda in the final showdown scheduled for Friday, March 22 at the Accra Sports Stadium at 20:00 GMT.
