Bawumia pleads with ‘senior brother’ Mahama: “Let Me Have My Turn as President”

New Patriotic Party flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia has made a heartfelt appeal to his main contender in the 2024 presidential election, former President John Mahama, to allow him the opportunity to lead the country as well.

During a visit to Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV at his palace in Wa on Sunday, May 19, 2024, Vice President Bawumia emphasized that his campaign has remained respectful and free of insults, adhering to the traditional leader’s advice. He shared that he has asked Mr. Mahama to be patient and give him the chance to ascend to the presidency.

“I am very much guided by your advice and have been implementing it by sharing my ideas with the people of Ghana without insulting anyone,” Bawumia said. “This is how I have been campaigning throughout, telling Ghanaians what I plan to do as president and highlighting our government’s achievements to gain their support for the next level.”

He continued, “My main opponent and I are both your children from the North. He has been president before, but I haven’t. So, I have told him that he is my senior brother, and he should have patience for me to also become president of this country.”

Bawumia concluded by suggesting that his potential presidency could offer more stability and continuity. “I can serve as president for eight years, whereas he can only serve for four more years. If the presidency is coming home, then we should have it for eight years rather than four.”
