Reverend Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, the commissioner general of the Ghana Revenue Authority, said that to increase revenue collection, the Authority intends to connect all VAT-registered sellers to a single platform.
He claims that the shared platform’s primary purposes are to assure compliance and eliminate laborious manual billing.
This comes after the GRA sent agents to various vending locations nationwide earlier this year to enforce adherence to the VAT policy formally.
Vendors reacted negatively to the deployment because they thought the GRA’s strategy was aggressive and harmful to their companies.
The GRA contends that the rollout increased income, hinting that certain sellers did not previously adhere to the VAT regime.
Dr. Owusu-Amoah said the GRA was trying to connect all VAT-registered suppliers to the GRA’s standard system to enable far more effective compliance when speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express Business Edition.
He asserts that this will be accomplished by the end of 2024.
In the interim, as part of initiatives to broaden and deepen the revenue pool, the GRA aims to register approximately 1,600 merchants onto the VAT system in 2023.
“I’ve stated that 1,600 VAT will join the team in 2023. No VAT-registered seller will be allowed to sell after 2024 if they are not connected to our system. Hence, starting in 2024, we’ll stop writing invoices by hand.
“The pilot has performed well thus far, as I mentioned, and as We speak, we are evaluating. When I say we’re reviewing, I mean that we’re looking to see what needs improving, any areas where we think we did well and need to improve even more, and any areas where we did not perform well and need to improve. Also, we have resources on the ground and some outside resources that are assisting us in our evaluation.
“When I refer to foreign resources, I mean nations that have done it before and have experienced similar phases; as a result, they are with us right now, on the ground. And after the evaluation is complete, we put the suggested steps into action. Thus, by year’s end, 2023, 1,600, and 2024, he said everyone who sells and is registered for VAT must be connected to our system.
