Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, a former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, has alleged that some high-ranking officials in the Ghanaian government, including appointees at Jubilee House, are involved in illegal small-scale mining known as ‘galamsey’.
In a 36-page document addressed to President Akufo-Addo, the Chief of Staff, and the police, Prof. Boateng cited individuals who he claims frustrated his efforts to combat the illegal mining activities.
He stated that some officials from the national to the unit committee level had friends, relatives, financiers, and agents who were engaged in illegal mining, with most of them working with Chinese nationals.
The former Minister also accused a former MP of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region of selling illegally acquired mining concessions at GH¢200,000 each.
Prof. Boateng believes that individuals who engage in illegal mining activities were behind his removal as Minister.
