The CEO of Ghana’s Minerals Commission, Martin Kwaku Ayisi, has stated that illegal mining, known as galamsey, is still prevalent in the country and cannot be ended anytime soon.
Although he refused to admit that the government has failed to end the issue, he acknowledged the outrage expressed by the public regarding the situation.
He emphasized the urgency of dealing with the problem, saying that he understands the anger expressed by Ghanaians when they see polluted water bodies due to illegal mining.
The issue of galamsey has gained more attention recently due to a report by the former chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining, Prof Frimpong-Boateng, who accused some government officials of frustrating his efforts to fight the illegal mining practice.
While some of those mentioned in the report have denied any wrongdoing, many people in Ghana believe that the fight against galamsey has been unsuccessful.
