Rastafarian student nearly denied by Achimota may represent them in NSMQ

Social media has been abuzz since a photo surfaced showing Achimota School’s potential team for this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), with Tyrone Marhguy prominently visible.

Tyrone was at the center of a controversy two years ago when he and another Rastafarian student were denied admission to the school due to their hairstyle, which was considered a violation of the school’s code of conduct.

The students took the school to court, and in May 2021, a High Court ruling directed Achimota School to admit them.

Tyrone’s colleague, Oheneba Kwaku Nkrabea, enrolled at Ghana International School on a scholarship. However, after the court ruling, Tyrone went to Achimota School and sat for his end-of-term examination hours after being enrolled.

The recent development of Tyrone’s potential participation in Achimota School’s NSMQ team has stirred discussions on social media. People are intrigued by the possibility of this becoming a ‘zero-to-hero’ story as the national quiz approaches.

It’s worth noting that Tyrone was also spotted among the team last year, sparking conversations about his involvement.
